DAMN YOU ZAMENHOF!

Let me begin by declaring my hate for the child of one L. L. Zamenhof. Zamenhof, perhaps better known as Dr. Esperanto is the father of the Language of the same name. What really annoys me is that the layman searching for information on constructed languages will, before finding ANYTHING else, come across something talking about Esperanto. Okay, yes, Esperanto is a conlang, and it is one of the most well know, but it was created to serve as an auxlang. I detest auxlangs (auxiliary languages) because their purpose is to become a Lingua Franca for the world, their purpose is to subvert and replace other languages, they are essentially poorly designed linguistic cancers. Poorly designed because not a one has managed to actually do what it was designed for. Not Esperanto or Lojban or Loglan or any other potential auxlangs that may be hanging about. These are designed with the purpose of replacement, and somehow they end up the best known.

But what about Tolkien? Tolkien was a rather well accomplished conlanger, even building multiple daughter languages from a single mother tongue. Of course many toss Tolkien's work aside as simply a diversion or an amusement. Yes, because it has no true linguistic merit, they're not a real languages, nobody is ever going to use them and they didn't arise naturally. But an auxlang is acceptable because it has ambition, it has an aim to subvert and control, much more noble and acceptable. Moving away from Tolkien there are other things, like Klingon. Klingon has a huge following among linguistically inclined Trek lovers, there was even a mental institution looking for a Klingon translator because they had patients who refused to speak in any language BUT Klingon.

Even with the large conlangs like Tolkien's work or Mark Okrand's Klingon, there is so much more to conlanging that the big world. There is a thriving and growing community of conlangers who are always trying new things. The community I am part of spawns Mark Rosenfelder's Zompist.com and calls the ZBB (ZompistBulletinBoard) home. There are males and females there, people of all ages, from all over the world. And people work on their conlangs and conworlds and ask for opinions or advice, and others offer what they have. From a single native Icelandic speaker there is now an entire group of people learning Icelandic. People here learn languages not necesarily because they'll use them in travel, but because linguistics fascinates them, they want to learn more and expand their understanding and create something new. This is the real community of conlanging, this sense of always learning, always expanding and growing. Always more. Always trying to make something new and more realistic. And it isn't just confined to languages, but I mentioned earlier worlds. Entire planets being created with biologies and cultures and everything created and new, and all of that requires understanding and knowledge.

So if you ever want to know about constructed or artificial languages, don't get caught up in the wiles of Esperanto, because that's just the surface of an entire community of dreamers who want nothing more than to create.

It's nice you are so knowledged on this subject... now go do your homework. I'm sure you could work all this into something... like a project on... um, tolkien and his crazy elves? But yeah. Speaking as someone who knows nothing about conlangs and all that stuff, I don't understand the yelling and suchlike, but whatever.

Who is moki? I have started both of my comments today with a question. Useless questions that I don't really care about. It is amusing because Alitta tried to learn one the elvish languages and klingon. We'll, it's good stuff anyways, very interesting. And yeah... that was a quite enthusiastic post on your part. My mom keeps complaining about me taking languages ("are you sure you want to take spanish?" "why are you taking spanish, you cna't even finish your other homework" "go talk to bin laden, if you can find him" and it goes on.) Mein mutter does not appreciate languages. And it really annoys me. My sister and I had a nice dinner conversation (alone because my parents were both at work STILL) in spanish and french. We've agreed we'll communicate in other languages as much as possible from now on. I expect to be confused for a large part of my life.
And I had wanted to take latin in grade 10 but then my mom convinced me out of it. My dad doesn't share his opinion, but I'm sure he doesn't really like it either. Well, they drive my fascination. (along with you who keeps talking about all these things that I don't understand...yet...).
And yet I remember that i'm totally screwed...phyics project, physics lab, 2 scholarship applications, hum projects, spanish story, butterfly208, physics chapter, physics test corrections so that i don't end up with 35%. and oh...i'd really rather be learning a language, about a religion or reading some history...or more historical literature.
Learning some of the trades would also be fun...and well...I don't want to choose, I don't what to do something next year, I want everything. (except drama...because i'm still against the acting thing). Oh, so I talk about all these things I want to do. I should really get going. But the more busy I am, the more time I have to waste to stay sane. Are you walking home right now? and where is rebekah? who is moki???
I don't like wednesdays. they're a marathon of madness, let's see how long i can keep myself sane so that i can go to physics at the end of the day.
I chose something a few days ago. It was to write the AP exam. I'm not really sure why. I think it's because I logicized with myself...that's not a word...and decided I've already spent too much time on physics this year to not write the exam. So I fail. oh well. I'll still write it.
Let's say something happier now that I should be ending this comment soon. at least zamenhof has a nice name...I wonder what I'll end up getting for christmas from my mom (you were there when i was talking about that, right?), alright, time to go! speaking of which, i'm listening to LOTR right now...

English translation below.
Angla traduko poste.

Tre facilas lerni. Fakte, mi studis nur kelkaj semajnoj antaŭe ĉi-tion skribis.

I am not able to speak for all esperantist, but I can say that of all the esperantists I've met, there hasn't been one who wishes to conquer other languages. We believe that there should exist a great diversity of languages. The only time I have heard about Esperanto and persecution of a language together, was about the second world war. Apparently, Hitler persecuted esperantists saying that they were spies.

Now, esperantists for the most part can be divided into two groups: "finvenkistoj" (final-victoryists), who really want that esperanto should be spoken in that greatest part of international communication, and "raŭmistoj" (Raumists), who believe that esperanto culture is its own end. But, even the finvenkistoj don't want to destroy other languages. You can read about finvenkismo at http://uea.org/info/angle/an_manifesto_prago.html (in English).

In case you cannot speak more than one language, I would encourage you to thing about esperanto. It is very easy to learn. In fact, I have only studied a few weeks before writing this.
