A Few Words
To begin, I have three words. About Fucking Time!
To all of the Canadians out there who are supporters of same-sex marriage, cheers.
And to all the Canadians out there who are no supporters, I have a few words for you. This is not about the definition of the word marriage. This is not about the failing political power of religious institutions. This is not about being homo- or heterosexual (though it is a nice event for we Canadian queers). This is, when it comes down to it, minority rights. Opinion polls have suggested that far lower than 50% of Canadians support same-sex marriage, which means the majority dissaproves. Majority wins, right? That's how democracy works. Except, thankfully, it isn't, because when the majority gets to make all the decisions without thinking about what the minority thinks or feels or believes, we end up with tyrany. A tyrany of the majority, but tyrany nonetheless. The beliefs of the majority cannot, in a nation of supposed Freedom and Equality (I'm not tossing in democracy here because that's a different issue), be allowed to dictate the rights and freedoms of the minority. The Freedom and Equality parts are the key aspect.
Freedom. The ability to do as you please, to believe as you please, and to act as you please. Yes, we have laws that restrict freedoms, but for the most part these laws are in place to protect society or to prevent one persons acting out of their freedoms to impinge upon the rights and freedoms of another.
Equality. Equal means the same or equivalent. Therefore the freedoms one group of Canadians enjoy should be enjoyed by all Canadians, based on the concept of equality. You see, we don't live on the Animal Farm, and thus we don't live by the rule that some are more equal than others, at least not in philosophy, in practice it has been like that and still is, despite recent developments attempting to rectify that.
Basically what I'm saying is, if you want to bitch and moan about how the dirty fags and dykes are ruining marriage because they want to do it too, that's your right. It is not, however, your right to proclaim that they get married, unless you want to give up that right yourselves. Equality means for everybody, and thus rights must, and I cannot stress this word enough, MUST be the same for all, whether part of the Majority or a Minority. Majority Tyrany is not equality, and it is not democracy (which everybody seems so keen on touting about). Majority Tyrany is social abuse, it is repression and persecution. The question isn't, "Do I want to live in a country where queers can marry?". The question is, "Do I want to live in under a tyrany?" And I think I can answer that question for most people without even asking.

We're so pushy about our rights too.
Lol, okay, I can get married now, married, married... who should I marry? Want to get married Kolyn? I mean, because we can.
LOL, yeah...
*happy smile* I can get married. Well, will be able to, once I turn eighteen and the bill goes through the senate and such. Oh, and I find someone to marry. You know.
I do believe in minority rights. Especially when I'm one of the ones in said minority.
Cherry pick rights! Cherry pick! lol, we love our speechwriters. Especially the ones fixated on proof
Anytime I start thinking about the government (and sometimes almost any government on the earth) I get annoyed. So mostly I try and not think about the government. But of course, my values are skewed and I don't really have any ethical problems with stealing dependent on various factors etc. Rights are good. But too many rights are bad in the way of being more equal. But i never understood that because if it's more equal than it's not equal. Guess what, equality is scalar. Or maybe it's just a constant. pick a number...any number.
People have problems. I'm glad I can't light matches very well or have a gun. looks like spain passed their same sex marriage bill. Technology progresses quickly apparently. Humanity does not. how sad. Since killing half the population doesn't seem like a very reachable goal I suppose I could go help humanity... okay...off I go
